Pierre Cardin

Pierre Cardin was a French fashion designer known above all for his avant-garde style and innovative approach to design. The name Pierre Cardin, however, represents a revolution not only in fashion design, but also in the comprehensive use of a brand that became synonymous with luxury and high quality.

Pierre Cardin founded the company under his own name in 1950, and as early as 1953 he became a member of the prestigious French association Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, which brings together leading designers creating luxurious, exclusively bespoke and often handmade fashion for the most demanding clientele.

In 1959, Pierre Cardin significantly surprised the fashion world by creating a collection later known as prêt-à-porter, meaning “ready to wear”. While maintaining high quality and a luxurious character, these products appeared in stores for a wider public. For this bold step, Pierre Cardin was expelled from the syndicate, but was later accepted back. Today, prêt-à-porter collections are a standard part of the offering of major fashion houses.

From 1977 onwards, he was awarded the “Golden Thimble” several times, the highest award of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. In 1992, Cardin became the first fashion designer in history to be given a seat at the French Academy of Fine Arts, the Académie des Beaux-Arts. In addition to professional recognition, Pierre Cardin also achieved considerable social respect. From 1991, he served as an honorary ambassador for UNESCO, and from 2009 as a Goodwill Ambassador for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO.

Pierre Cardin’s designs are characterised primarily by clean lines, geometric shapes and unisex fashion, as well as inspiration drawn from the Space Age and experimentation with new materials. In 1964, Cardin achieved worldwide recognition with his futuristic “Space Age” collection.

In addition to clothing and accessories, Pierre Cardin also designed furniture, interiors and objects of applied art. His work extended into the automotive and aviation industries, as well as other areas of design. He also established himself successfully as an entrepreneur. From 1981, he was associated with the luxury Maxim’s restaurants and developed an extensive system of fashion licences around the world.

Pierre Cardin is one of the personalities who fundamentally influenced the shape of modern fashion, design and the way global brands are built. His name continues to represent a combination of bold creativity, precise craftsmanship and a distinctive sense of elegance. Pierre Cardin collections therefore build on the legacy of a designer who changed the perception of fashion and succeeded in connecting it with lifestyle, design and everyday use.
